Top Ten Movie Blogfest

Just for fun this morning, I'm joining in on Alex Cavanaugh's Top Ten Movie Blogfest.

Check out my favorites then go here to find all the other blogs giving you their top ten pick today.

Thanks to Ninja Captain Alex's for creating this fun event.

I'm sure as I read everyone's lists today, I'm going to see lots of movies I didn't think of that belong on my list but here are ten of my all time favorites. I couldn't possibly rank them so I'm listing them in chronological order.

Bringing Up Baby (1938)

Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant

No, I wasn't around when this was released, but I first saw it on the late show (does anyone remember the late show?) and have loved it ever since. One of the great screwball comedies from the 30's.

Philadelphia Story (1940)

Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and Jimmy Stewart

Another great comedy from before my time.

African Queen (1951)

Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart

What can I say? It's a classic.

Desk Set (1957)

Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy

Okay, you got me. I love pretty much anything starring the Great Kate. This is my favorite of the Hepburn-Tracy films.

  Long Hot Summer (1958)

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward

One of the great Hollywood couples, Newman and Woodward only made a few films together. This was the first and it's my favorite.

Some Like It Hot (1959)

Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon

The American Film Institute chose this movie as the greatest American comedy of all time and I'm certainly not going to argue.

The Music Man (1962)

Robert Preston and Shirley Jones

I enjoy musicals in general but there's no topping Robert Preston's Professor Harold Hill.

The Americanization of Emily (1964)

James Gardner and Julie Andrews

A World War II comedy-drama that just happens to star a couple of my favorite actors.

High Road to China (1983)

Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong

I'm really not sure why this is one of my favorites but I never get tired of watching it.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)

Francis McDormand, Amy Adams, and CiarĂ¡n Hinds

I enjoyed this movie so much, the following Christmas I gave the DVD to a half dozen friends. Francis McDormand is fabulous.

Okay, that's my ten.  Are any of your favorites on my list? Care to add a title or two?

Quotes for the Day: (I couldn't decide so you're getting two.)

You know what your problem is, it's that you haven't seen enough movies - all of life's riddles are answered in the movies. ~ Steve Martin

I'll watch anything with Cary Grant in it.

I have not seen most of your list (at least I don't remember having done so), I feel I should look some of them up. I used to love when they showed black and white movies on Friday evenings on BBC2 and during school holidays when I was a teen.

Going with old time classics. Nicely done. Love to watch the Blake and whites on Turner Classics.

Stacy McKitrick said...

I've seen seven of your ten (Bringing Up Baby is also one of my favorites) and own three of them. I'm surprised you don't have Arsenic and Old Lace on this list, though. I know, I know, you could only pick 10.

But I'm with Maria - I pretty much loved everything Cary Grant starred in!

LD Masterson said...

Mood - Totally agree.

Rhonda - Do you love brass band or con men? *grin*

Tara - Oh, that's another great one.

Jemi - Check out one or two that you haven't seen. You may find a new favorite.

Maria - Amen.

Natasha - There were some great old films back in the days of B&W.

Stephen - Hey, I AM an old time classic.

Stacy - Yup, if it had been a longer list, Arsenic would have been on it.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

I've only watched two of those movies but I completely agree with Hitchcock

great classic entries... and then a dabble of high flying plane action.

Great list, I've seen half of it and enjoyed them. Like the last quote too.

I'm sorry, but I haven't seen any of those!

David P. King said...

Some Like It Hot. Yep. Still one of the funniest movies ever made. Great list! :)

VR Barkowski said...

Amazing list! Some serious classics here. Who can argue with Tracy and Hepburn? Haven't watched The Long Hot Summer in years. I wonder if I'd still think it was as "steamy" as I once did.

Some classics!
Thanks for participating in my blogfest!

What a fun list. I love old classics. Got on a Cary Grant kick for a while and loved both of these you've listed. Also, the poster of Paul Newman alone makes me want to watch the Long Hot Summer again. Yum. :D

Oooh, classics. I loved Katharine Hepburn. And those cheekbones!

One of my favorite classics is Charade with Cary Grant and that other Hepburn girl :)

Nancy Thompson said...

Wow, you're so old school! Who knew?! All good choices.

The High Road To China!!! Thank you for remembering this movie! I used to watch it as a kid because my mom had a huge crush on Tom Selleck. I loved it. "Speak!"

I haven't seen the Katherine Hepburn movies, but I'll add them to my "to watch" list.

Great list!

I love and agree with that Hitchcock quote. Alas, a blogger is giving Katharine Hepburn the recognition she's due. You had a lot of greats on here. I smiled while reading through this fun list.

Thanks for stopping by.
I'm joining your pack and hope to see ya back at Life by Chocolate.

And I nearly fell out of my chair reading your quote from Hitchcock!

I FORGOT A JAMES GARNER/JULIE ANDREWS MOVIE: A Special Night. I love that movie. Gee. I have too many favorites. I'm putting some of yours on my Netflix.

Great list.

Alfred Hitchcock is a genius! If only all filmmakers listened to him.

You are a classic gal, that's for sure. Miss Pettigrew has just gotten added to my to-watch list. Thanks for the tip. I love Francis McDormand!

Jeremy - That movie has some great flight scenes.

Karen - Great minds, obviously. *grin*

Pat - Thanks, glad you liked my picks.

Diane - Not even African Queen? Aw, you've missed some excellent films.

Jay - Time to see it again.

L.G. - I stayed up late on Saturday nights but either way they were worth watching.

Mark - I expected some of these to be unknown (or at least never seen). Check out one or two of the ones you haven't seen. You may find a new favorite. And thanks for becoming a Follower.

J.A. - I think Music Man was a high school production staple for decades.

Robyn - Thanks Robyn and I'll see you over there.

LuAnn - I hope you like them them. And thanks for becoming a Follower.

Nicki - If you love Francis, you will love Miss Pettigrew.

Denise - "Super duper scrumptious" I like that description. Thanks.

mshatch said...

I haven't seen all of these but I used to love to watch the old movies on AMC when it's all they showed. Bringing Up Baby is one of my favorites. I just love Katherine Hepburn.

Elise Fallson said...

I see a Katharine Hepburn theme going on here. She was so beautiful. Unfortunately, I've never seen any of her movies! I really need to remedy this. (:

Elizabeth Seckman said...

I love old movies! No one I know will watch them with me, so when I am left to my own devices, I hunt one up and spend some quality time with me, myself, and I.

Nice to meet you! So totally not believing you are a grandma...unless you're just using a pic from the last century.

farawayeyes said...

OK, you got me with a few movies that I absolutely adore that did NOT make my list (even though I cheated heartily).

'Bringing Up Baby"
'The African Queen" (I did mention in the comment box
' The Long Hot Summer'
AND one of my all time favorite comedies----"Some Like It Hot'

I actually own all of those, but alas they are on VHS stored in a locker in the States while I reside on an island in the Caribbean.

Thanks for bringing me here. In those immortal movie words 'I'll be back'.

I see what you mean by loving the classics. There are some great ones listed here.

Jaime said...

Great list. I've only seen African Queen & Some Like It Hot. I also love the quote from Hitchcock.

Robin said...

This reminds me that I need to watch more classic movies. I have seen The Music Man so many times that I can't even tell you, but the rest... well I suppose that means I need to add them to the Watch List! Love the Hitchcock quote. He is quite right.

LD Masterson said...

mshatch - I've given up on AMC's definition of "classic". Thank goodness for Netflix.

Elise - You're missing out on a national treasure.

Elizabeth - Must be the baseball cap. *grin* Nice to meet you, too.

farawayeyes - You've left your classic movies behind? Horrors. I'll have to smuggle you a DVD.

Natasha - And thanks for coming by mine.

Julie - Isn't it terrific?

Pk - Now that's my kind of research.

Jan - Thanks, I do love them.

Jaime - Well, those two are a great couple to have seen.

Robin - That Hitchock quote is one of my favorites. The man knew his audiences.

Jeff Hargett said...

Ah! My lady Hepburn had it going on! I never was a big Selleck fan though, much to the dismay of some. A few in your list, like Long Hot Summer and The Music Man, I haven't seen, but probably should.

Donna K. Weaver said...

Great choices! I love those older films. It's funny how we sometimes forget they were so great and don't share them as often as we should with younger people.

Yolanda Renée said...

Love Hepburn and Tracy!

Great list, funny thing how each site brings up a movie or two your wish you'd put on your own list. But ten is ten! :)

triles said...

Fun list. Can't say I've seen them all, but Some Like it Hot and African Queen are two films I love.

Melody said...

First list I've seen of all (or mostly) classics - awesome! Sometimes I find myself randomly singing "76 trombones led the big parade...." :)

LD Masterson said...

Jeff - I wasn't a big Selleck fan either but I like him in this.

Donna - I introduced my 14 year old grandson to Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot. I think it jump started puberty.

Yolanda - I've been gathering "oh, I forgot that one" films all over the place.

Tim - Yup, those are great ones.

Melody - Well, who doesn't? *grin*

Kimberly Gabriel said...

I love African Queen and Music Man. The quotes at the end are perfect! ;)

Alexandra Heep said...

Interesting list. I am afraid to say I've never seen any of the movies on your list in entirety. Or, at least I can't remember. I used to watch a lot of old, black and white movies in the 80s on AMC though.

Glorygarden@msn.com said...

Oh, yes, Kate the great films are my favorite with Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart close, too.

LD Masterson said...

Madeline - Thanks!

Birgit - Woman of the Year and The King and I were both wonderful films.

Alexandra - Aw, you've missed some great ones.

Glory - They just don't make stars like that anymore.

Empty Nest Insider said...

Some Like It Hot is one of my favorite movies though it didn't make my list. I just saw it again on TV, and it also deserves the award for best last line! I'm also a huge fan of Katharine Hepburn, and I have to remember to be on the lookout for Philadelphia Story.

Miranda Hardy said...

The Music Man was one of my favorites growing up. Should have made my list!

LD Masterson said...

Julie - I saw a lot of movie on other people's lists that I love but didn't think of. And yes, that's a great last line. Joe E. Brown was hysterical.

Miranda - My dad loved that one. We used to watch it together.

Michael Di Gesu said...

Hi, LD,

LOVE your choices. How on earth did I forget SOME LIKE IT HOT! I had just watched it a few weeks ago.... LOL. Also great Katherine Hepburn flicks.... they are classics.

AND Miss Pettigrew was a great English flick.

Thanks for sharing.

Wow. I've only seen one of these movies. Guess I have some work to do.

Daisy Carter said...

You have some great films on your list! I'd add It Happened One Night and Pillow Talk because I just can't get enough of either of those movies!

LD Masterson said...

Hi, Michael - Miss Pettigrew is one of those fabulous films no one has heard of. Glad you saw it.

Heather - Aw, I wish you'd mentioned which one. Now you've got me wondering.

Daisy - Doris Day made so many fun films. Can't believe I forgot It Happened One Night. Yes, I should be on there.

Mike Keyton said...

I'd add Drums along the mohawk to that list. (The child in my would whisper Davy Crocket - before it got a severe beating.) And Heaven's Gate I think is vastly underrated film

Mike Keyton said...

Bugger. Sorry for the typos : )

LD Masterson said...

Mike - I don't remember whispering Davy Crockett (was it supposed to make you brave?) but I remember wearing the coon skin cap.

What typos? :-)

Unknown said...

You picked some classics. I have been shamefully neglectful of watching classic movies; something I do hope to do more of in the future. Thanks for sharing, I will have to check these out :)

Great list of classics. Some I haven't seen, but will have to watch.

LD Masterson said...

Emilyann - I hope you find a new favorite.

Millie - Gotta love those classics.

Shannon Lawrence said...

I haven't seen the last three, which is surprising seeing as how I like the actors/actresses involved. Hepburn always reminds me of my grandma, her spirit, personality and strength.
