Hump Day Headlines...and More

Happy Hump Day

I'm back. Did you miss me? Notice I was gone?

I had an interesting and rewarding time serving with our church's disaster recovery team in Union Beach, New Jersey, but I was blown away by the amount of devastation still waiting for recovery efforts a year and a half after superstorm Sandy. So many people are still without their homes or trying to live in partially repaired houses. Like many people, I'd thought the bulk of the damage had been repaired. The national media goes home and we assume the crisis is over. It isn't. Please give the people who were affected by Sandy your prayers and any support you can.

Now on to our hump day funnies.

Since I mentioned the media, how about some headlines?

Think about it a second.

Wow. They must have been desperate.

Um...duh.

But his head feels fine.

I guess that was a good day to be a nobody.

Here's a joke I heard the other day.

Man on phone to wife: "Honey, don't panic, but I got hit by a car at lunch. Paula brought me to the hospital. They've taken a bunch of X-rays and I've got three broken ribs and a compound fracture in my left leg. I've only got a minute to talk because they're taking me up for a CAT scan to check for bleeding inside my skull but I told them I had to call you."

Wife's response: "Who is Paula?"

This one just seems kinda timely:

Okay, time for your "aw". I defy anyone to look at this picture and not say it.
Or at least feel it.

You know you did.

That's it for today. Are we there? Over the hump and on the downhill slide to the weekend? I hope so.

Did you have a favorite?

Have a great weekend and I'll see you here next Wednesday (if not at your place before then).

Question of the Day:

If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?

My husband and sons are going to NJ next month to help a friend with home repairs needed after Sandy.
I like the eat the 30% of the ice cream. My children are old enough they're learning the harsh lesson of legal thievery all by themselves.

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

Those headlines were hilarious! And that sign about taxes is perfect.
Sorry there is still so much damage at Union Beach. You're right, the media stops reporting and people forget. But that kind of recovery effort takes years.

Linda G. said...

Good to see you back! Sorry to hear there is still so much to be done in Jersey.

I did it. I said aw. :)

Those headlines gave me a good laugh, as did the joke. Ha!

Maryannwrites said...

The kitten looks so much like my Lily when she was a baby, of course I had to say Aw.

Glad you are back, and I am so proud of you for all the ways you help people.

Those headlines cracked me up. Some people don't think before writing a headline. They go for the pizzaz and don't stop to think about what the words are actually saying.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

Aw!!

Who's Paula - LOL.

I'm working on a project right now that involves a similar tragedy. People are still living with destruction.

Maria Zannini said...

Re: Who's Paula?

Damn, skippy. That's what I'd ask. LOL.

I'm glad you're back. I've been going through hump day withdrawals.

Kaye George said...

Welcome back! I'm glad you got that chance to make a difference.

The headlines are too much! Thanks, LD.

Heather Musk said...

I can just imagine my daughters reaction if I tried to eat any of her ice-cream!
I'm not usually much of an animal person either but your 'aw's' never fail to make me feel it, at least on the inside.

I had no idea that NJ was still in such need of help, good job for getting out there to help out. I can imagine it being both draining and rewarding.

Unknown said...

I loved the headlines...specifically bridges help people cross rivers : ) And darn it all, I did say Aw...even though I told myself to fight it!

Heather R. Holden said...

Welcome back! That's so sad about people still suffering from superstorm Sandy...

Those headlines are hilarious, though, and that kitten definitely made me "aww"!

Misha Gerrick said...

Awe! That picture is too cute!

Welcome back. I will pray for the people still recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

Rhonda Albom said...

Great laughs. I think my favorite headline was the leg pain, but I love the "whose Paula" joke.

Mason Canyon said...

It's sad that we forgot after the media leaves when disasters strike.

Glad you're back. Love the headlines (don't they ever reread what they've wrote before printing?). The Paula joke is priceless and the kitty, oh you know aw!

Julie Flanders said...

Absolutely LOVE the headlines. LOL.

So hard to imagine the devastation in New Jersey. I can't believe people are still without homes. How absolutely awful.

Tyrean Martinson said...

Those headlines were hilarious!!! Loved them all.
The kitty picture definitely made me say aw.
And the ice cream sign . . . hmm, I think it's a good idea. :)
It makes me sad to know how much damage is still being repaired, and how little attention disaster areas get within a week after their occurrence. It seems we get inundated for 48 hours with too much information, and then . . . nothing.
Glad you were able to help!

LD Masterson said...

Susan G/K - Kudos to your husband and sons for helping. (Go for the ice cream.)

Alex - Glad you liked the funnies. When I was with the Red Cross, we always knew as soon as the media went home, donations would fall off to nothing. Out of sight, out of mind.

Linda G. - I knew I'd get you with that "aw".

Maryann - I expect errors in the text of news articles, but the headlines never fail to amaze me.

Diane - Where are you working?

Maria - Me, too! LOL And I'm glad you be saving you from withdrawal.

Kaye - Thanks. And you're welcome.

Heather M. - An "aw" on the inside still counts.

Millie - Hah! Told you you couldn't resist.

Heather H. - Thanks, and I'm glad you liked them.

Misha - Thank you. Prayers are most definitely needed. If you like to know a name when you pray, pray for Bonnie and her family.

Rhonda - Well, I'd certainly want to know, wouldn't you?

Mason - Hey, I got you all the way around. Thanks.

Julie - It is, very sad.

LD Masterson said...

Hey, Tyrean, your comment slipped in while I was answering the others. You're right, information overload in the beginning, then it's done.

Susan Flett Swiderski said...

Welcome back! I guess it's pretty much the way it works with every disaster: when the media loses interest in the clean-up efforts, the public thinks it's "over." Bless you for helping.

Lots of good laughs here. And yeah, an "awwww," too.

Unknown said...

Amazing how easily or quickly we forget that which isn't in front of us and sentionalized.

Fun headlines too.

Crystal Collier said...

I have friends who got hit by Sandy, and I know what construction is like in the city. It must be even slower in NJ. I was relieved just to know none of our friends had been hurt in the storm. The recovery is going to take decades.

Those newspaper titles are epic. Whew!

Unknown said...

Those headlines are hilarious! I wish more A-Z-ers did comedy posts. Laughter is in short supply on the A-Z trail. I adore the "Aww" - look at those sweet blue eyes! Baby oil - obviously made from babies. Hehehe!

Cathy Kennedy said...

All of these funnies, I have seen before and love 'em. In fact, I have shared some of the very same ones on my blog. I just loved you question of the day! Now following...

mshatch said...

Now that's an aw.

The advice about taxes is pretty educational. Will be putting it into practice.

Nicki Elson said...

Awww!

our Humpday funnies will send me into the weekend quite nicely. They were extra good this week -- the headlines plus your dry comments. :)

I'd laugh about the tax joke...if it wasn't so true...

Nicki Elson said...

Oh my gosh -- you got me in such a laughy mood that I didn't comment on New Jersey. I can't believe those people are still feeling such harsh effects. Bless you for doing what you can to help -- and for opening our eyes. I will pray for them.

P.S. THANK YOU for the prayers for my dad that I asked for a few weeks ago---we go the miracle!! He's among the less than 15% who can be treated with a pill instead of chemo. He started on it this week. :)

Donna K. Weaver said...

You made me smile. And awww. Have a great weekend!

LD Masterson said...

Susan F. S. - Sad but true.

Julie L. - Glad you liked them.

Crystal - You're right, the important thing is always whether people were hurt.

Lexa - I would have gone with a laughter theme but I couldn't handle the everyday commitment. At least you can get them here on Wednesday (or Thursday or whenever you come by).

Cathy - Thanks so much for coming by and Following. I'll be visiting you shortly.

mshatch - Yup.

mood - Aw, you just want their ice cream.

Nicki - That's wonderful news about your dad. I'm so happy for you. I'll continue to pray for him.

Donna - Thanks. You, too.

Jemi Fraser said...

Love those ridiculous headlines! The 1st one is my fave!! I used to enjoy Jay Leno's headline segment too :)

Rawknrobyn.blogspot.com said...

You know it's a crazed world when newspaper reporters cover stories about hospitals that resort to hiring doctors.

I love the smell of baby oil and refuse to think about its ingredients.

Thanks for the smiles and cheer. You're always good for that, LD.
Have a lovely weekend.

You gave me a few chuckles, one awww, a laugh out loud even though I saw it coming (the "Who is Paula" joke).

Michelle Wallace said...

Ha! Good question: Who is Paula? Oops...
No prizes for guessing...

Arlee Bird said...

A lot of good ones here this week. I love the headlines.

All of my daughters live near the damage done by Sandy. One of them had both their family cars replaced due to the flooding. Otherwise they fared better than most.

Hi, LD. How have you been? Yes, I did miss you. I'm sorry it took this many days to drop by for your Wednesday post. Sad, isn't it?
Anyway, I hope you're having a great weekend! Have a great week!

So sad/disgusted to hear that there is so much more work to be done in NJ. Millions/Billions have been poured into disaster recovery and cleanup. Makes you wonder where all that $$ goes. It's not going to the people that need it most, that's for sure.

Michael - Happy to have you on any day.

James - And a great week to you, too.

Liz - Very true. And very sad.

I'm here from Blog Blitz! and happy to have made the trip! So sad to hear NJ is STILL suffering a year and a half later! I live in Florida and we had a devastating year in 2004 when most of the state was affected by several hurricanes. For several years, we saw blue tarps on top of houses, but this is to be expected in a state that routinely denies hurricane and flood insurance (the MOST powerful lobby, besides big PHARMA) and then drags its feet when it comes to fixing anyplace that isn't in a tourist-friendly area!

Awwww, most definitely! Thanks for the headline laffs and the wonderful pictures! Mary aka Viola Fury @ViolaFury on Twitter http://www.homelesschroniclesintampa.blogspot.com

I love those headlines; they gave me a needed laugh this morning. When I was in high school, the kicker for the football team's last name was Player. One week the headline for the game coverage was "Player Kicks Winning Field Goal." As opposed to a coach or cheerleader, I suppose. :)

Anyway, Happy Blitz Day!
