Genre Favorites Blogfest

Kicking off the week with

(drumroll, please)

This Blogfest is the baby of Ninja Captain Alex Cavanaugh and you can see who else is participating here.

It's a simple one (which is why I jumped on board).  The rules:

List your favorite genre of:

Movie
Books
Music

And a guilty pleasure genre from any of the three categories!

Okay, when I got down to it, I realized simple doesn't necessarily mean easy. Picking from all the genres I enjoy in these categories was tough.  But here's what I came up with and why.

Movie: Romantic Comedy

When I go to the movies I just want to be entertained. I don't want to have to work too hard. Plus, I think the Romantic Comedies fit the standard two hour time frame better than some other genres.

Runner up: Action/Adventure - for the same reasons.

Books: Mystery/Suspense

With a book, I'm willing to work a little harder.  I want to engage "those little gray cells", follow the twists and turns, try to figure out where the author is taking me before we get there, and be surprised at the end.

Runner up: Pretty much everything else - I just like to read.

Music: Golden Oldies (50's and 60's)

What can I say?  That's my era.  We didn't have a zillion different categories back then. Rock & roll was rock & roll.  And folk music was mixed right in.

Runner up: Broadway show music - I love theatre.

Guilty Pleasure: Animated Children' Movies

From the classics (Bambi, Lady and the Tramp) to more recent (Up, Finding Nemo), I'll try to find a kid to take with me but I'm not above going by myself.

Runner up: Old movies from the 30's and 40's.  Tracy and Hepburn, The Thin Man, Bing and Bob On the Road to...wherever, and early Hitchcock.

Please hop over to Alex's blog to see the list of participants and check out some other bloggers' favorites.

And I'd love for you to leave me a comment and tell me yours.

Groaner of the Day:  (Hey, I haven't tortured you with one of these for a while.)

King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the Euphrates, the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate, he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for a loan.

Croesus said, "I'll give you 100,000 dinars for it."

"But I paid a million dinars for it," the King protested. "Don't you know who I am? I am the king!"

Croesus replied, "When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no difference who you are."

Consider me adequately tortured. I knew I shouldn't have read the groaner.

Damn my curiosity!

Taking a kid isn't necessary for animated movies!
Thanks for participating in my blogfest.

L. Diane Wolfe said...

I love animated kids' films.

Cate Masters said...

Oh, I love the On The Road movies with Bing and Bob. Great choices.

LD Masterson said...

Maria - Don't say I didn't warn you.

LD Masterson said...

Alex - It's a fun blogfest. Thank you for coming up with it.

LD Masterson said...

Diane - Could you pick a single all time favorite?

LD Masterson said...

Cate - I wondered if anyone would ever remember them. They were wonderful.

Arlee Bird said...

I'm with you on all those choices. I just saw Hitchcock's Strangers On A Train for the first time Saturday. What a great film! Hitchcock was a master of the film art.

And...groan.

I like animated films, too. I take my husband as we have no young kids or grandkids to take along.

Also like the older Broadway tunes. My father used to sing a lot of them, so I learned them as a child growing up.

Nancy Thompson said...

Romantic comedies are everyone's favorites, though with some, like me, it's a guilty pleasure.

Stacy McKitrick said...

Oh - GROAN!!

Favorite genre?
Movie - Romantic comedies
Books - Romance
Music - Alternative
Guilty Pleasure - Disco music. Yeah, it's dead, but I just love the beat!

J.L. Campbell said...

Hi, LD,
I like animated movies too, but for me they're just plain enjoyment.
Got a chuckle out of King Ozymandias.

Kimberly Gabriel said...

I love your guilty pleasure - that's a good one! I agree - some of them are really entertaining!

Emily R. King said...

With four children of my own, I watch a lot of children's movies. The Pixar films are my favorites.

Nice meeting you, LD. I'm a new follower!

What a fun blog here! Came by to say thanks for your kind comment. Love your list--way fun. Glad to be connected! ;)

Jennifer Lane said...

*groans loudly* ;-D

Great blog you have here, and we have similar tastes when it comes to movies and books. Did you cry in "Up"? Of course you did. Do you plan to see Finding Nemo 3-D?

I like your blurb for Hunter's Way, LD. Happy writing!

Jemi Fraser said...

So many great choices!! I love pretty much everything you've listed! :)

Patricia Stoltey said...

I loved your groaner. That and your post reminded me that I also love the great animated films...including Pinocchio, Cinderella, and Snow White. Some pretty good songs in those movies.

I LOVE animated children's movies, and so did my mom, even at the ripe young age of 82. :)

LD Masterson said...

Lee - I'm glad you finally saw Strangers on a Train. It's a classic. There's never been anyone quite like Hitchcock.

Unknown said...

The joke is so funny and I love how you love mysteries!

LD Masterson said...

Maryann - I'll drag my husband along if I have to but I'd rather take a grandkid.

For me it was my mom listening to Broadway music on the stereo (Remember stereos? Like giant ipods.)

LD Masterson said...

Nancy - I guess at my age, there's not a lot I feel guilty about any more. :-)

LD Masterson said...

Stacy - Aw, you know you liked it.

Hey, I like disco. Best music ever to clean house to.

LD Masterson said...

Hi J.L., I love someone who appreciates a good groaner.

LD Masterson said...

Kimberly - And you have little ones, so you have the perfect excuse.

LD Masterson said...

Emily - Pixar films are wonderful.

Thanks for 'following', I've returned the favor.

Tara Tyler said...

ha ha, groan!

great picks! love a good mystery =)

LD Masterson said...

Morgan - Thanks. Glad you stopped by.

LD Masterson said...

Jennifer - Gotcha! (I love a good groaner.)

Someone said that the most beautiful love story ever filmed was the first eight minutes of Up. I totally agree. (Yes, of course I cried.)

I'd love to see Nemo 3-D. Just need to snag a grandkid to take me.

LD Masterson said...

Jemi - Well, we're even then. I loved yours, too.

LD Masterson said...

Patricia - Thanks.

And don't forget the ultra romantic 'Bella Notte' from Lady and the Tramp. *sigh*

LD Masterson said...

Linda - Some movies are ageless, as are the perple who love them.

LD Masterson said...

Karen - I know. Almost freaky, wasn't it? Are you my long lost twin?

LD Masterson said...

Clarissa - Hey, someone who appreciates a good groaner. Thanks!

LD Masterson said...

Tara - You had some great ones, too.

Nicole said...

Great answers! I love all the animated classics, too. ;)

Anonymous said...

I love the Broadway tunes too! RomComs are definitely in the lead for movie favorites...

Isis Rushdan said...

LOL, I'm so with you on the animated movies!!

KM Nalle said...

Rom Coms are the best in my book. I'm a Cinderella fan myself, but I also loved UP. It had me crying within 11 minutes of starting the movie.

Angela Brown said...

Hey LD, I'm with you on the animated children's movies. I love them. Maybe that's why I'm such a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki's anime movies.

Hmmm...

And the groaner definitely made me groan...then laugh lol!!

LD Masterson said...

Nicole - Thanks. I guess there are a lot of us animated classic lovers around.

LD Masterson said...

Liz - I think there's a connection between romance and show tunes. Many of the greatest love songs ever written came from Broadway.

LD Masterson said...

Isis - We should form a club. :-)

LD Masterson said...

Kari - I think if anyone wasn't at least sniffling within 11 minutes of the start of UP, there's something seriously wrong with them.

For the old classics, I was more a sucker for the animal stories like Bambi (talk about crying) and Lady and the Tramp. But Cinderella was wonderful.

LD Masterson said...

Angela - I've never really watched anime but my daughter-in-law has tons of them.

Yeah, it was a definite groaner.

Unknown said...

Hey we might have more in common than you think :) As a grandma I too am still enjoying my youth through childrens films and books :) Nice to meet you.

J.C. Martin said...

Totally agree with you on Music, Books, and your guilty pleasure! And a big hello to a fellow crime writer!

J.C. Martin said...

And LOL! I loved your groaner!

I've seem childrens animated movies a lot and I have to agree I love them too. The Incredibles is my favorite.

LD Masterson said...

Siv Maria - Nice meeting you too.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question but did something disappear from your favorite genre post since yesterday? I popped over to refresh my memory on your choices and I would have sworn you said something about old time rock&roll, but there's no mention of it now. Am I having a senior moment?

LD Masterson said...

J.C. - Always a pleasure to meet a fellow crime writer. Especially one who appreciates a good groaner.

Sarah Ahiers said...

Pshaa, you don't need to feel guilty about animated children's movies. They rock!

LD Masterson said...

Stephen - Of the current generation, I think Finding Nemo is my favorite. Ellen Degeneres's Dora put it over the top for me.

LD Masterson said...

Sarah - Yeah, they really do.

Ellie Garratt said...

'The joy of writing fiction - meeting new people in places that don't yet exist.' Love this!

Great choices, especially Lady and the Tramp. A true classic.

Susan Oloier said...

Yes...love the romantic comedies and the kid flicks.

LD Masterson said...

Ellie - Thank you. And, yes, Lady and the Tramp is one of the all time greats.

LD Masterson said...

Susan - What's not to love, right?

Unknown said...

LOL - I love your groaner (yes, I groaned). I too enjoy kid's cartoon films - I take my husband's 8 year old. Just saw Ice Age and Madagascar

LD Masterson said...

Susan - I saw those two, too. I have to grab a grandkid for my cover.

Cynthia said...

I like your reference to "those little gray cells"- it's been awhile since I read an Agatha Christie book. I do like a good mystery.

Nicki Elson said...

Ohhhh, excellent groaner. I like your picks too, and I agree with you on the reasons for liking Rom Coms (+ Adventure ;)) best.

Michael Di Gesu said...

Hi, L.D.,

Dropping in for the blogfest. And glad I did. LOVED your Groaner of the day.... VERY CLEVER!

Nice to meet you and I am a new follower.

LD Masterson said...

Cynthia - Ah, you recognise Hercule. Mysteries are fun. (So are Archie comic books. I remember you.)

LD Masterson said...

Nicki - I love anyone who can appreciate a good groaner. Thanks.

LD Masterson said...

Michael - Hi, thanks for coming by. And I've been over to visit yours as well.

Two comments in a row that appreciated the groaner. My day is made.

Susan Gourley/Kelley said...

Your groaners are one of the few things that make me laugh outloud when I'm in a room alone.
I've noticed a few other 'guilty pleasures' similar to yours on this fest.

E. M. Prokop said...

Oh man! Every time I visit someone's Genre Favourite list, it reminds me of stuff I forgot to put on my own list! I do love your choices, especially the animated films..my fave is Beauty and the Beast..and the groaner...ugh! I loved it!

LD Masterson said...

Susan - Wonderful. The ultimate compliment, laughing out loud.

LD Masterson said...

Eve - I had the same problem as I made the rounds. So many great things I didn't think of.

Murees Dupè said...

I love romantic comedies too. They just make me feel all warm and fuzzy afterwards. Thank you so much for visiting my blog. I am very grateful.

LOL at the groaner...oh my!

Like you, I prefer to be more challenged with books and less so with movies, but sometimes a movie that makes me think is good, too. Depends on my mood.

And I love the Golden Oldies. I used to blast them as a teen. People always knew it was me on my way. Really, I just like music. But I know the Golden Oldies by heart.

Thanks for stopping by!

My Genre Favorites & Guilty Pleasures

LD Masterson said...

Murees - Can't go wrong with warm and fuzzy. And thank you in return.

LD Masterson said...

James - Nice to meet you, too. I always find it interesting that people can enjoy such diverse genres as horror and romantic comedy but so many of us do.

LD Masterson said...

Shannon - I tried to stay current with music trands through the decades but finally decided the oldies were just my kind of music. And "blast" is the correct volume.

Donna B. McNicol said...

We do have a lot of similarities! I didn't mention the kids animated movies but I love them, too. Cars is one of my latest favorites...watched it just before my cross country solo motorcycle trip, really set me up for Arizona.

LD Masterson said...

Donna - Well, that's one thing we don't have in common. I never learn to ride a motorcycle. Closest I ever came was burning the heck out of my leg on a guy's exhaust pipe. Diecided I was too clumsy.
