Finding a Lost Treasure on Facebook (and the Riddle Answers)

I had a strange and kind of neat happening this evening. A friend and ex co-worker called me and said she'd received a Facebook friend request from a Judy Smith (yes, I'm changing the names) and it showed me as a mutual friend. Was that possibly Judy White that we both worked with a couple decades ago?

I told her no, I hadn't heard from Judy White in over 15 years, but...hmm, I couldn't think who Judy Smith was either.  Well, Judy is someone who doesn't post often but she'd recently changed her profile photo and the more I looked at it the more I thought, dang, that does look like Judy White.

Well, a few e-mails later and the three of us were on a conference call, happily catching up on lost years. I had originally "friended" Judy ages ago without realizing who she was. (We had another round-about connection and I thought she'd friended me because of it.)  Since she doesn't post much, I'd never caught on.

It's always a treat to find an old friend on Facebook, but I don't often find one hiding among my own friends.

Speaking of Facebook - not all my FB experiences are going as well. I've got my new LD Masterson FB page up and I've got a lovely group of friends already but I'm having a terrible problem with the page. The Sort button is missing! You know, the button on your NewsFeed that is supposed to give the option of displaying the most recent posts first.  It's not there, which means I can't get a "Most Recent" sort, which means I can't find the latest posts, which means I'm missing the chance to Like or Comment on what my friends have to say.

I've researched the problem on Facebook and Google and it appears to have happened before to different people but no one has a solution. Sometimes the button just re-appears.  I don't know what I'm going to do if it doesn't. But if you're one of my friends on that page, please understand that I'm not ignoring your posts. I most likely haven't seen them.

Now, as promised, here are the answers to last Wednesday's riddles.

1 - In California, you can't take a picture of a man with a wooden leg. Why not?
You can't take a picture with a wooden leg, you need a camera.

2 - Which is correct to say, "The yolk of the egg is white." or "The yolk of the egg are white."
Neither. The yolk of an egg is yellow.

3 - Why did the elephant sit on the marshmallow?
So he wouldn't fall in the hot chocolate.

(I love the last one because I have a wonderful memory of my youngest telling it to my mom when he was around five and I can still hear her laughing.)

Congratulations to Heather M. Gardner, Maryann Miller and all of you who figured out all three but kept quiet to give others a chance.

That really sucks about Facebook's "sort" button--hopefully it reappears for you sometime! At least reconnecting with an old friend was something positive to happen to you. :)

Re: FB button

It'll come back and sort itself out. This has happened to me on numerous occasions with FB, Twitter, Blogger, you name it.

I wonder if you changed your settings temporarily to give FB a boot in the butt.

Interesting story about your FB friend. You are right. You don't often find old friends AMONG your FB friends. I think they call that "hiding in plain sight." That is wonderful:)

I wonder who is hiding in my friends? I don't post there often either.

That's annoying about the button.

See... you're just making me MORE glad I stuck to ONE name and don't have to make changes. I almost went with my maiden name as my pen name, but man, that would have been work! Yeah, I'm all about EASY.

Hope your sort button comes back soon. I know what you mean. You don't really want to see posts from last week! Well, I don't, anyway.

Wild you were friends with her and didn't even know it.

Hey, sometimes if you change your browser, that works. Once in a while my Internet Explorer blocks stuff, so I switch to Google Chrome...

That is such a cute visual of your 5-year-old telling your mom a joke :)

What's the link to your new FB page? I'll gladly give it a like.
I love it when you find long lost friends on the Internet. I found a friend from grade school who I'd always wondered about, and we've gotten together a few times since.

Ah, Facebook, finally a good story. Lately all I have been hearing are the bad ones. I was briefly considering reopening my page and decided against it. Glad to hear of someone reunited with a 'real' friend.

Love your jokes and that final foolish quote had me on the floor.

How nice that you found an old friend on FB. I didn't get any of the riddles answers -- and they were all excellent!! Thanks for the chuckles! :-)

Your re-connection via FB sounds fantastic. There's still something good to be said about that site even with the occasional desire to shake a fist at it :-)

For all the bad things I've heard about FB, there are good things, too, like hooking up with long lost friends. (But not good enough to entice me to spend much time there.) Good luck getting everything to work right for you on there.

I love the quote. My husband and daughter constantly repeat a silly joke like that to each other. Then they both laugh. It's silly and wonderful.

Heater - Keep your fingers crossed for me for the return of my lost button.

Maria - I've changed every setting I could find, even ones I didn't understand. So far, no luck.

Robin - "...in plain sight." Exactly so.

Diane - Might be worth poking around in your friend list. Who knows what you'll find.

Stacy - Well, heck, if my name was McKitrick and not Leszczuk, I wouldn't have needed to change. *grin*

Alex - Yup, it has me shaking my head.

Gwen - I've tried IE and Firefox. And, yes, it's a favorite memory.

Cate - I went with a personal page instead of a professional so it's a friend instead of a like and you're already on there. (Thank you!)

farawayeyes - Well, I guess I had a good and a bad but the good was really good.

Lexa - I think the last one is hard to get unless you're five years old. Or learned it from a five year old.

Angela - I've got mixed feeling right now but if Facebook will give me back my sort button, I'll be its best friend.

Oops, both Susans slipped in while I was answering comments.

Susan F. S. - Thanks. I'll take all the luck I can get.

Susan G/K - Silly family jokes are the best.

Ah, using misdirection to help with the punchline. Very clever indeed. Nicely done!

I've had no end of fb trouble...friends being deleted when I didn't do it, friends comments being deleted without me doing it (or them) and other unexplained stuff that no one can account for yet causes all kinds of hard feelings. Sigh. Love your quote. Missed Friday's riddles, but those were good ones!

I'd be upset if I lost my Sort button on Facebook. Like you, I like to see the stuff being posted in order, and I like to see all of it.

As much as I detest Facebook, I think it's neat how people can connect by using it.

Nice to hear you re-connected with some old friends....cool stuff :)

I've lost my sort button a couple of times, too. Once it stayed away for a while. Another time, it was back in a day or two. I think it's a FB thing.

I love the elephant joke!

I love reconnecting with long-lost friends on Facebook! It's really a marvelous tool, isn't it?

That's a really nice story about you and your friends on FB. It's things like that that make the headaches of FB tolerable! Sorry about your sorting issue.

The last riddle is very cute, what a sweet story about your son and mom.

LD Masterson said...

Stephen - Clever? Me?

Tina - FB is love it or hate it... usually both at the same time.

Patricia - Not to whine but - I WANT MY BUTTON!

Mark - I have found some old friends so that part is pretty cool.

Carole - Well, at least I'm in good company. And I'm glad you liked that joke.

Julie - It definitely has its uses.

Julie - Thanks. It's a favorite memory.

Ah Facebook, so frustrating and so unavoidable. Hopefully the frustration is worth what we get out of it, right?

I've gotten FB friend requests from people I knew in grade school!! And haven't talked to in decades. Very weird.

LD Masterson said...

Sarah - Hopefully.

Linda G. - Exactly.

Liz - I've got a few of those. We exchange life updates and "have you ever heard from?" then pretty much ignore each other unless we have something current in common.
